I was only 11 when I watched The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Ever since then, my love for J.R.R. Tolkien and all things Hobbity has grown 748,000-fold.
I never thought I would muster up the courage to get a tattoo, nor desire one, until I solidified my move to New Zealand. What better way to ink my travels here, as well as mark this chapter in my life, than to get an Elvish tattoo?
I don’t think anyone understands the meaning and significance behind this tattoo besides one or two close friends. I wanted this tattoo for over a year now. Each member of the Fellowship got the same exact one (except John Rhys Davies – his stunt double got it in his place) at Roger’s Tattoo Art in Wellington. The symbol is the Elvish number for nine (nine members of the Fellowship).
Elijah Wood, my all-time favorite actor (that I genuinely admire and crush on), has his tattoo on his right hip. Of course, I wanted to get the same one – same location, same placement, everything. Yes, I’m that nerdy.
Knowing that my time in Wellington was coming to an end, I knew I had to do it before I left for the South Island. Thanks to my trusty friend Alexa (words can’t even describe how much I love and miss her already), the below photos sum up my wincing, fear, and relief once the 5 minutes (or less) was over and I was permanently inked with Elvish:
This was my permanent souvenir of Wellington, and it couldn’t have been more worth it. And alas, one of the main reasons why I chose to live in Wellington was its tie to Lord of the Rings in the first place. I will always love you, Wellington – thanks for the memories.
And the road goes ever on…
